On Tuesday the Manny Machado to the San Diego Padres news broke. The high profile free agent signed a 10-year, $300 million contract.
The move turned up the temperature on the hot stove. It also caught some off guard, including White Sox executive vice president Kenny Williams, who was shocked by the news.
The White Sox were long believed to be the frontrunner to land the 26-year-old and made several other moves to get his friends signed in hopes of luring him to the windy city. The Padres swooped in and proved that “small markets” can make a splash if they want to.
