It finally happened.
The Chicago White Sox ended their 21-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday.
Rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon pitched six solid innings of one-run ball and struck out five to earn his second career win. Dominic Leone, Chad Kuhl, and John Brebbia shut down the A’s over the final three frames to secure the victory.
Andrew Benintendi led the White Sox offensive charge, hitting his 10th home run of the campaign in the fourth inning off starter Ross Stripling, who took the loss. Benintendi also had a double and two runs scored in the contest.
“It feels great. Any time you win, it’s great. Any time you win when you lose 21 in a row is even better,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said after the game, according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times.
“I’m proud of these guys.”
The 21-game losing streak equalled the second-longest winless stretch since 1900 and was just two losses away from tying the modern-era record of 23 straight defeats.
Before Tuesday’s victory, the White Sox (28-88) hadn’t won a game since they beat the Minnesota Twins on July 10.
The South Siders have 46 games remaining and are still on pace to lose more games than the 1962 New York Mets, who finished their campaign with 120 losses.
