Home plate umpire Jeff Nelson left Game 3 of the ALCS after taking two foul balls off of his mask in back-to-back innings. Nelson took a foul off the bat of Houston’s Yuli Gurriel in the third inning and Martin Maldonado in the following inning before leaving with what was quickly diagnosed as a concussion.
Foul balls to the mask are no joke. There was a 16 minute delay at Yankee Stadium as another umpire suited up to take over the home plate umpiring duties.
