Not only is that short statement alliterative, it’s also real talk.
If you are an MMA fan or you bet on sports, you’ve probably heard of Jessica Andrade.
A week or so ago, the UFC’s strawweight champion was rolling around with her wife when motorcyclists started getting a little too close for comfort. According to Jessica Andrade, when they hit a red light the motorcycle closed in and was suddenly by her side.
Initially unaware of what was truly transpiring – not yet noticing the gun– the fighter stepped out of her vehicle thinking that the assailants were going to ask her a question. That’s when she finally noticed the gun.
The robbers took their belongings, including her wife’s ring and one hopped in her car to get away with their vehicle as well. But the e-brake was on, set by a difficult-to-see button and the attacker couldn’t drive away. Andrade was worried that the crook would get frustrated and get out and shoot her and her wife. Luckily, no one was hurt. Her wife, Fernanda, explained that it was the handbrake and how to release it, and the criminal drove off.
“The lights went red, and I slowed down. I saw a motorcycle close, and when I realized he was already by my side, I wasn’t quite aware of what was going on. I thought he was going to ask me something. When I saw the gun, I was like, ‘Oh crap.'” – Andrade via ESPN
Andrade also stated that she was wearing a white headcloth and grateful that the criminals didn’t recognize her. “People think I’m rich. Well, I’m not. I’m poor, just like everybody else. If someone kidnaps me, they’re getting nothing but a candy; a gum.”
At a local drugstore, a clerk was nice enough to let them call the police and even gave the Andrades $40 for emergency money, which probably came in handy for the cab ride home after filling out the police reports.
She also gave some great words of wisdom, stating that when someone unarmed assaults you, you can use self-defense tactics. But when they have a gun, just stay calm because it is not worth the risk of putting your life in danger.
So now that Andrade has survived a round with the mean streets of Rio, what’s next?
Joanna Jedrzejczyk wants a shot at the strawweight title. But Andrade came out and said the Joanna needs to win some more fights before she should get a shot at the belt. She feels that there is pressure for her to immediately accept a battle with Jedrezejczyk because she lost to her, but when she lost that fight, she had to beat three top-ranked opponents before another shot was given to her.
In UFC 238 we’ll see Nina Ansaroff clash with Tatiana Suarez. Michelle Waterson has won three straight and was there waiting to challenge Andrade (or Namajunas). So we’ll likely see Andrade take on the Karate Hottie or the strawweight winner at UFC 238.
Joanna, get in the octagon and take a few heads off, then you’ll get your chance.
