The Toronto Raptors announced on Friday that they have fired their head coach Dwane Casey. Rumors that they were considering firing the winner of the Coach of the Year award swirled after they were swept by the Cavs.
The Raptors released a statement on the firing, via CBS Sports:
“After careful consideration, I have decided this is a very difficult but necessary step the franchise must take,” Raptors president Masai Ujiri said. “As a team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next level,” Ujiri said. “We celebrate everything Dwane has done for the organization, we thank him, and we wish him nothing but the best in future. He was instrumental in creating the identity and culture of who we are as a team, and we are so proud of that.”
Being swept at the hands of LeBron and the Cavaliers two straight years is hard to overlook. But Casey did just win the Coach of the Year award and there is the possibility that LeBron heads out west next season.
Why not give Casey another season, possibly without LeBron in the East, to see if he could finally get over the hump?
