The Houston Texans have agreed to a four-year, $160 million contract extension with quarterback Deshaun Watson, his agent David Mulugheta told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday.

The total value of the deal, to be signed later Saturday, is $177.54 million with nearly $111 million in guarantees, trailing only quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ 12-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs as the largest in NFL history.

Watson will make $39 million per year in base salary, on average, over the next four years, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL during that time frame.

“As a child growing up in Georgia, it was always my dream to play in the NFL,” Watson said in Twitter post Saturday. “Today, I couldn’t be more honored and humbled to sign a long-term deal in Houston, the city that I’ve grown to love so much and now call my home.

“… I promise to do everything I can to not only bring a championship to this great city but also leave a legacy of helping positively impact this community. Now back to the work …”

In his post, Watson thanked the Texans organization, coach/general manager Bill O’Brien, his mother and his family, the fans and his teammates “past and present, for believing in me and helping me grow as both a player and person.”

This is the first offseason Watson was eligible to sign a contract extension.
