Being open and honest is never as easy as it sounds.

In a time when pain is everywhere and the novel coronavirus pandemic has shut down the world, Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer opened up about his own battle.

Maurer, in an Instagram post Friday, shared how close he was to taking his own life on Jan. 22nd.

The 19-year-old Maurer detailed his struggle with mental health that dates back to the seventh grade, when his father was sent to prison for 25 years and his mother and stepfather separated.

While in high school, one of Maurer’s close friends killed himself. Maurer lost two others to gun violence.
