Zack Smith of the Ottawa Senators cross-checked Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin. Malkin responded by slashing Smith and cross-checking him into the Senators bench.
A referee wrapped Malkin up and escorted him to his own bench. Smith decided to follow and got a couple of shots off from just outside the Penguins bench.
After the quick exchange, Malkin was penalized for his slash and cross-check. Despite following Malkin into the Penguins bench and throwing a few quick punches, Smith wasn’t penalized at all.
Smith started and finished the entire incident and skated away without having to sit in timeout.
