Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant entered a counseling program in Florida, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon.
The 23-year-old reportedly remains without a timetable for his NBA return.
Morant is currently away from the team undergoing what head coach Taylor Jenkins referred to earlier this month as a “healing process.”
After an early-morning March 4 livestream on his Instagram in which Morant flashed what appeared to be a gun at a nightclub in Glendale, Colorado – hours after Memphis lost to the Denver Nuggets – the former Rookie of the Year said he’d “take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”
The Grizzlies initially announced that he’d miss at least two games. On Wednesday, Memphis ruled the guard out for at least another four games. Morant has now missed five consecutive contests, including Monday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks.
When asked if Morant could return as soon as Friday against the San Antonio Spurs, Jenkins only said that the fourth-year guard is open to whatever the agreed-upon course of action is.
“There are a lot of internal dialogues going on, and obviously there’s still things going on at the league level that we’re in communication with,” the head coach told MacMahon on Monday. “Ja’s fully engaged in this process and ready for whatever comes next after these two games.”
Both the NBA and Glendale Police Department launched respective investigations into Morant’s livestream. The latter concluded its probe Wednesday, stating that Morant wouldn’t face charges due to a dearth of “available evidence.” Glendale police added that no complaints were made from the club Morant attended and that a gun wasn’t found.
The Grizzlies have 15 regular-season games remaining following Monday’s encounter in Dallas. The first round of the playoffs, which the club is still on pace to qualify for, begins April 15.
