On October 18, 2024, the Stonehill College women’s ice hockey team suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat in a fierce battle at the Bridgewater Ice Arena. The Friday loss saw the Skyhawks drop to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play, with the Pioneers making a huge improvement against their conference opponents by 3-2 overall and 2-1. Sacred Heart did not hesitate to seize an early opportunity to lead the game after one minute. They started with an incredible opening goal in the conference encounter. Thanks to a two-versus-one breakaway, Limke of the Pioneers took advantage of a cross-ice pass by Sydney Antonakis to open her scoring account for the season.

A few minutes later, Stonehill bounced back into the game by firing in the equalizer on the power play. Lily Geist showed her determination by pouncing on a loose puck in the slot to score the second goal after the Pioneers tried to defend a shot from senior captain, Josie Mendeszoon. However, barely ninety seconds after she had tied the game, the Pioneers managed to regain their one-goal lead. Heger controlled a pass in the slot from Sophomore Bria Holm, sending a powerful shot over the pad to secure her first collegiate goal.

The two opponents battled down the ice after the game produced three early goals, with each side trading shots and power play opportunities until the fifteen minute mark. At that point, the Skyhawks equalized the game, 2-2. Regarding the power play, Karo sent a saucer ice cross to her colleague Feeney, who rifled towards Actyl. The latter’s shot redirected into the back of the net to the utter surprise of Greene. One exciting event that unfolded over the game was that the two teams played to an even matchup with the Skyhawks outshooting the Pioneers by 17-11 over the fifteen minutes period in the final frame of duration.

However, fast forwarding to the 16 minute mark, Bennett’s sit was redirected off the skate of a Stonehill defender, flying into the top corner of the Skyhawks net. This result changed the game, as the Pioneers were now up by one goal with less than four minutes to play.

Although Stonehill put in a valiant effort during the final two minutes left in regulation, they were unable to light up the lamp and earn the equalizer. Sacred Heart celebrated wildly as they walked away victorious, with the final score line being 4-3.
