Things got a little weird in Clearwater on Thursday during the Tigers-Phillies spring training game. There were several batters hit by pitches and five ejections to go along with it.
Home plate umpire Tom Hallion wanted to get in a little ejection practice as the regular season approaches. That’s the only excuse for five ejections during a spring training game.
Hallion’s ejection party started in the 5th inning when Tigers pitcher Matt Boyd hit Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera with a 3-1 pitch. The bizarre ejection put a smile on the face of Boyd, who was a little confused by being tossed.
The party picked back up three innings later when Phillies pitcher Parker Frazier hit Derek Hill in the leg with a 1-2 slider. Both Frazier and Phillies manager Gabe Kapler were ejected.
Hallion finished off the ejection party in the 9th inning when Phillies pitcher Pedro Beato and bench coach Rob Thomson were ejected after a Beato fastball got a piece of Dylan Rosa’s jersey.
This kind of performance let’s you know we will definitely be hearing Hallion’s name again before the season is over. It also is a pretty good indication that it’s probably time to consider replacing Hallion.
