Via The Athletic:
In the latest sign of their ambitions, the Padres have discussed a trade centered around Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts, sources told The Athletic.
Such a deal would shatter the relative monotony of the past month. Especially active over 10 days between November and December, the Padres have not completed a trade since. The justification from within has stuck to a familiar script: While recent acquisitions collectively illustrate a spike in urgency, the Padres do not want to jeopardize their future in 2021 and beyond. Certain player-related discussions have faded because of this line of thinking. The opening-day payroll already is roughly $10 million above what had been budgeted for 2020.
Still, there could be room for a compelling exception. Betts, an established superstar and a free agent after the upcoming season, easily qualifies — depending, of course, on the price.
It sure looks like Mookie Betts is going to be on another team to start the season. The Red Sox are talking to everyone who is interested in him.
Trading Betts seems like a huge mistake.
