The AFC Championship game could be moved to Monday night and be played in the Rams’ Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The reason for the move is that the NFL doesn’t want the tiny Dignity Health Sports Park and its 30,000 seating capacity to host the big game.
A lot of things would have to happen in order for that to take place, but the NFL has discussed the possibility of moving the game. In order for the game to be moved to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum both the Chargers and Colts would have to win this weekend (unlikely).
If somehow the Chargers and Colts both pull off the upsets then the Chargers, as the higher seed, would host the AFC Championship game.
On top of that, if the Rams end up hosting the NFC Championship game then the AFC Championship game, if moved to the Rams’ stadium, would also be moved to Monday night.
Via CBS Sports:
Sources said that last month there were internal discussions about possibly playing Sunday night and Monday night championship games in the event both the Rams and Chargers hosted conference-title games, with both games being played at the Rams’ Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It was not considered feasible for the L.A. Coliseum to host both championship games on the same Sunday – in double-header fashion – I’m told, but moving the AFC Championship Game out of 30,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park is something many within the NFL offices would support. And, given the way the playoffs have sorted out to this point, it remains possible that L.A. teams host both championship games.
What a mess. I have a better idea, move the Chargers back to San Diego and a real NFL stadium.
