Via NY Post:

US Olympic fencer Monica Aksamit — who earned a bronze medal in 2016 — has earned more than $16,000 to help her get to the 2020 games in Tokyo, after opening up to The Post about the financial hardships of being a competitive athlete in a niche sport.

Last month, the Morganville, NJ, resident started a GoFundMe page to support her training and traveling as she works to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

And in less than two days, the 29-year-old saw her haul soar from $11,600 to $27,948.

“I still haven’t been able to process it,” Aksamit told The Post. “It’s so hard to put into words. Absolutely, there is gratitude. It was overwhelming. Someone actually donated $5,000.”

The lesson here is, if you have a dream and you’re good looking, people will give you money.  You have to love the Olympic system.
