The Opening Day matchup between ace pitchers Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom delivered. Each starter looked like they were in mid-season form.
Both starters recorded double-digit strikeouts for only the second time on Opening Day in MLB history.
.@Max_Scherzer and @JdeGrom19 each had 10+ Ks today.
This is the second time in @MLB history that both starters in an #OpeningDay game reached double digits (McNally, McDowell, 4/7/1970). pic.twitter.com/KJt2wrWkND

Scherzer topped deGrom’s 10 strikeouts with 12 of his own, but went home with the loss after giving up two runs to deGrom’s zero.
The fact that the Mets won a game that deGrom started is really good news. The reigning Cy Young Award winner didn’t get much run support last season.
Will the Mets be able to continue to outscore their opponents during deGrom starts? Only time will tell.
