Earlier this week former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon trashed Matthew Stafford during a segment on CBS Sports Network’s NFL Monday QB. He called the Lions quarterback a stat king, who racks up yards in garbage time, via 97.1 The Ticket:
“Can Matthew Stafford ever win in Detroit? I’m getting sick and tired of talking about Matthew Stafford. I mean, the guy is overpaid. He’s making north of $25 million, he’s been one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league over the last four or five years and he’s a stat king. He picks up a lot of yards and production in garbage time,” Gannon said.
Stafford inked a five-year, $135 million extension last year that at the time made him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. He’s since been passed by Jimmy Garoppolo, Kirk Cousins and Aaron Rodgers, but the fact remains he’s never delivered good return on the dollar in the wins department.
Stafford was asked about Gannon’s comments on Thursday and fired back at him by saying he doesn’t answer to Rich Gannon, via Detroit Free Press:
That is a factually accurate statement by Stafford, but Gannon’s take wasn’t wrong either. There’s really only one way to settle this. That’s right a cage match.
