One week after losing his left arm in a July 4 car crash, the Miami Dolphins defensive end spoke to CBS 4′s Peter D’Oench about the aftermath of the accident.
Norton, who was cited for an improper lane change, told D’Oench that he was happy to be alive. Norton is coming to grips with the loss of his left arm and NFL career but is also thankful that he is around to have those thoughts.
“I realize that I will not be able to play for anyone,” Norton said. “We are working past that you know. That reality is sinking in. I am alive and I am grateful.”
The NFL announced it will cover Norton’s hospital expenses through the league’s insurance policy. Norton’s friends have also set up a GoFundMe page, with a goal of raising $150,000, for additional expenses.
He also plans to host a blood drive in the near future.
“I am staying strong because all of the support from all of the fans, all of the teams, my family and everyone,” Norton said. “That is what is pushing me, my faith and the support from my family, my grandparents, my sports agent. Everyone is going above and beyond with nothing in return. Just to see people who have been supporting me is just great.”
Norton was on Miami’s active roster for the team’s final two games of last season but never played a snap.
Tough break.
