The 2023 NFL regular season will begin Thursday, Sept. 7 with the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium, a source told Jordan Schultz, theScore’s NFL insider.

The league later confirmed the scheduled game.

The matchup will feature two of the most potent offenses in the league from a year ago. The Chiefs led the NFL in scoring last season with 29.2 points per game, while the Lions ranked fifth with 26.6 points per outing.

Kansas City and Detroit last met in 2019, when the Chiefs took a 34-30 decision in Motown. Kansas City won its last two contests against the Lions dating back to 2015.

The Chiefs, led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, are expected to feature in several high-profile games on the 2023 schedule. They’re already penciled in for an international affair with the Miami Dolphins in Week 9.

The NFL will unveil every team’s full schedule Thursday night.
