The San Francisco 49ers will host the New York Jets in the 2024 season’s Monday Night Football opener on Sept. 9, the league announced Tuesday.
The Jets played in last season’s first Monday night contest and lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a season-ending Achilles injury in his debut for the team.
After being traded to New York in a blockbuster move from the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 offseason, Rodgers suffered the injury on the Jets’ fourth offensive play of the game.
The four-time NFL MVP attempted an improbable late-season comeback, but the AFC East club shut down the signal-caller after getting knocked out of playoff contention.
Rodgers grew up in the Bay Area and was famously passed over by San Francisco in favor of Alex Smith at the top of the 2005 NFL Draft.
San Francisco is coming off its second Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in five seasons. The defending champions will play against the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener.
