A Turkish court has accepted an indictment charging the father of NBA player Enes Kanter with “membership in a terror group,” the country’s official news agency reported Monday.
Kanter has said he believes the Turkish government has targeted his father in the past because of the player’s outspoken stance against the government and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkish news outlets are reporting that Enes Kanter's father, Mehmet Kanter, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail by a court in Turkey. “No matter what happens,
I will continue to keep fighting for Human rights and Freedom of speech,” Enes Kanter says in a statement. More: pic.twitter.com/SWPKM9ySJR— Ian Begley (@IanBegley) June 18, 2018
Kanter’s father is not in Istanbul at the moment, according to the player’s manager, Hank Fetic, but could be detained when he returns. There are reports that Enes Kanter‘s father, Mehmet, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Kanter is a prominent critic of the Turkish president and also reportedly a target of the government. I have to think Enes has something to do with this.
