Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien needed help off of the ice after his collision with Penguins defenseman Jamie Oleksiak. The two men collided when the 6’5″ and 260 pound Byfuglien laid a hit on Oleksiak, who is 6’7″ and 255 pounds.
The perfectly legal shoulder to shoulder dropped both men and left Byfuglien dazed and requiring help to get off the ice and on the Winnipeg bench. This is what a car accident on ice during a hockey game looks like.
Despite looking like a baby deer attempting to walk for the first time after the hit, Byfuglien was cleared to return to the game and he did. The NHL is reviewing their post collision process as a result of him being cleared to return to the game.
While it’s believed Dustin Byfuglien was assessed according to NHL protocol, the league intends on following up on last nights post collision process.
