American football remains by a wide margin the most popular sport in the United States. But what about the rest of the world? Baseball became the number 1 sport in Japan, while football stays in the USA. 

So. American football has long been introduced and cultivated as a “people’s sport”. It was popularized inside the country, not outside of it. Sort of like country music. 

One more thing. During the period of world popularization and unification of soccer, at the beginning of the XX century, the world was still dominated by the British, not the Americans. As a consequence, they were more mobile and infected the whole world with soccer exactly in their version of the rules. It was the English who taught the rest of the world how to play soccer. And FIFA established the triumph of soccer.

Something similar happens in hockey: the rules in the NHL and Europe/CHL are slightly different. Not as dramatically as in American football and soccer, but it is also the result of the evolution of the same sport on different continents. 

Though it doesn’t mean, that NFL teams are o my known in the United States. There are some names and famous logos of the American Football clubs which are instantly recognizable all over the globe. Plus let’s not forget, that the NFL franchises traditionally take more than half-lines in the annual Forbes rating of the most valuable sports clubs in the world.
