The San Francisco 49ers could have Christian McCaffrey back at practice as early as next week.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that San Francisco intends to open the 21-day window to activate the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year off injured reserve if he responds well to this week’s work, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

“It’s going to be nice getting him back, hopefully,” Shanahan added.

It was reported in September that the 49ers hoped to have McCaffrey back in early November. San Francisco has a bye this week before taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 10.

“He’s had no setbacks, so it looks like we’re on track, but he’s going to hit it hard this week while we’re gone and simulate some practice stuff for himself,” Shanahan said Monday, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

McCaffrey has yet to play this season, as he’s been on IR while battling an Achilles injury.

The All-Pro tailback is coming off a spectacular season, leading the NFL in touches (339), scrimmage yards (2,023), and total touchdowns (21) in 2023.

The 49ers have posted a 4-4 record this year. They’ve been missing several offensive weapons due to injuries, including McCaffrey and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who won’t play again in 2024 after tearing his ACL and MCL.
